**** PRD-MAKER ****
A PRINTER DRIVER UTILITY FOR MICROSFOT WORD AND HP LASERJET PRINTERS
WRITES PRINTER DRIVER FILES FOR ANY SOFT FONT MEETING HP SPECIFICATIONS
Soft fonts compatible with HP Laserjet printers are available from many
public domain and commercial sources. PRD-MAKER will write PRD and DAT
files for any compatible soft font.
NO SPECIAL DOWNLOADING OR EMBEDDED COMMANDS
Because PRD-MAKER writes fully compatible printer drivers, no special
downloading procedures or embedded file commands are required. The full
power of Word character formatting is available.
INCLUDES SUPPORT FOT BOLD-ITALIC IN ADDITION TO REGULAR, BOLD AND ITALIC
Printer drivers supplied by Microsoft support only three weights/styles.
PRD-MAKER includes support for bold-italic fonts.
MIX AND MATCH, TYPEFACES AND SIZES
The Microsoft merge-prd utility will not allow merging of drivers for soft
fonts with the same typeface but different sizes. Printer drivers written
by PRD-MAKER do not have this limitation. An example would be writing PRD
and DAT files for Roman sizes 6 through 16 with extended (complete)
character sets and sizes 18 through 60 with ASCII character sets (to save
disk space).
VIEW SOFT FONT HEADER INFORMATION
A detailed analysis of the information contained in the soft font header is
displayed for easy interpretation of the soft font file. This can be
particularly useful with public domain soft fonts.
COMPLETE DOCUMENTATION ON DISK
PRD-MAKER is very easy to use. The on-disk documentation contains a
complete explanation of each command, each screen and how to develop
printer drivers. Included are the printer drivers and style sheet for
Laserjet print out.
TUTORIAL ON SOFT FONTS AND DRIVER FILES
An extensive appendix to the documentation describes the information in
soft font headers and printer driver files. This is particularly helpful
for anyone who would like to modify PRD or DAT files.
SAMPLE SOFT FONTS AND DRIVER FILES
Files are included on the disk for a quick test run of PRD-MAKER with
sample results.
EXTENSIVE LIST OF SOFT FONT SOURCES
Public domain soft fonts are available on electronic bulletin boards
througout North America. Over 50 BBS modem phone numbers are listed along
with the names and addresses of 20 commercial vendors.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
IBM PC compatible computer
256K memory and 1 floppy drive
MicroSoft Word 3.0 or 4.0
HP LaserJet or compatible printer
Soft fonts meeting HP/PCL specifications
PRD-MAKER EXPLAINED
WHAT IS PRD-MAKER?
PRD-MAKER is a utility program that creates printer driver (PRD) and data
(DAT) files for Microsoft Word based on the data contained in a selected
list of soft font files. Each list may contain up to 32 soft font files
with different or similar characteristics. List management facilities are
provided to insure the soft fonts chosen are appropriate for a PRD file.
WHY DO I NEED PRINTER DRIVERS?
Printer drivers are the convenient connection between Word and the soft
fonts that make your laser printer a powerful printing tool. Microsoft
provides an extensive set of printer drivers for HP LaserJet printers,
however, the number of soft fonts available is growing rapidly. With PRD-
MAKER you can add new fonts to your driver files without waiting for
MicroSoft updates or purchasing expensive downloading utilities from soft
font vendors.
WHY PRD-MAKER?
There are many commercial, shareware and public domain software products
available that help you download and access soft fonts from a variety of
word processors. Few are specifically designed to work with Microsoft Word
with the full convenience afforded by the use of PRD and DAT files. PRD-
MAKER works with all Laserjet compatible soft fonts. Included as part of
the program is an analysis tool to help you understand and, if necessary,
modify public domain soft font files for use with Word. In addition,
support is provided for bold-italic fonts which are not included in the
printer drivers supplied with Word. PRD-MAKER is the cost effective way
to write Laserjet printer drivers for Microsoft Word.
WHERE DO I GET SOFT FONTS?
Soft font files are available from a number of sources such as; Bitstream
Inc., Swfte International Ltd., Hewlett Packard Co., SoftCraft Inc., and VS
Software. Public domain soft fonts are available on many electronic
bulletin boards including; Cooperworks (608-271-3685), MicroBBS (415-969-
7710), Publisher Information Service (312-342-6919) and Telesoft (415-969-
5486). A list of over 50 BBS and 20 commercial vendors is included with
PRD-MAKER.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
PRD-MAKER examines the headers of each of the soft font files in a list
supplied by the user. There are two restrictions for a soft fonts to be
used to produce one PRD file. First, all the soft fonts must have the same
orientation either landscape or portrait. Second, for a each size font of
a given typeface there may be only one file each for; regular weight, bold
weight, italic style and bold-italic. An optional display of soft font
header information is available on a file-by-file bases. Once the headers
of the soft fonts on the list have been reviewed by the program and found
acceptable, the PRD and DAT files may be written. Based on data from each
soft font file the information for the (PSD) Printer Sequence Descriptions
are written, then, for each proportional spaced font all characters of the
soft font file are examined and a width table is added to complete the PRD
file. Next a DAT file is written providing download information for each
soft font file. Processing by the program is then complete having produced
an ASCII text PRD file and a binary DAT file. To make the binary PRD file
required by Word the user processes the text PRD file using the utility
MAKEPRD, supplied by Microsoft with Word. The PRD file and DAT file are
now usable by Word to access all the fonts in the file list. MERGEPRD can
be used to merge the new PRD and DAT with others to provide more complete
soft font access.
